The screenshot below is a reminder of an uncomfortable truth in digital marketing:
Followers can be bought. Influence cannot.
Today, follower packages are openly advertised across platforms. For a relatively small fee, anyone can add thousands of followers to a page or profile within days.
Which raises an important question:
What does a follower count actually tell us?
Not much.
A large follower base may create an impression of popularity, but it does not necessarily indicate: ✅ Active engagement
✅ Audience trust
✅ Community loyalty
✅ Content relevance
✅ Commercial impact
In reality, many accounts with modest follower numbers consistently outperform larger accounts because they have something far more valuable:
An engaged audience.
An audience that comments, shares, saves, discusses, recommends, and ultimately takes action.
As marketers, brands, and organisations, we need to move beyond vanity metrics.
Instead of asking: “How many followers do they have?”
Perhaps we should ask: “How many people are actually paying attention?”
Because in today’s digital ecosystem:
Reach can be purchased. Visibility can be boosted. Followers can be acquired.
But genuine influence is earned through relevance, credibility, and meaningful engagement over time.
The future belongs not to those with the biggest audience, but to those with the most engaged one.
